Protect your PC ... maybe [Aug. 17th, 2004|02:17 pm]
Peter Sheil
As of Wednesday Microsoft will be shipping Windows XP SP2 from their update site - you may even get it downloaded without having to do anything if you've set up your system to do so (a mistake in my opinion).

Here is the article on the BBC's site about it
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3571110.stm

... and here is the Microsoft knowledge base article including all the programs which will stop working when you install SP2.

Also see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130 (thanks Tom).

Peace

Re: easy remedy

well ... the trouble with that is that a lot of the fixes are security related and by not installing some of them you are leaving yourself open to attack by viruses. Ok, strictly speaking that should be attack by worms, as they are a different spieces of "animal", but you know what I mean. Particularly some of the changes to Internet Explorer - without the fixes any website can take over your PC if it is coded to do so, either by a malicious author or by someone breaking into the site. Personally I now use Firefox iso IE and I'm quite happy with it. I think on my work machine I shouldn't have made the change, but hey that's their problem not mine :)

Peace
