That poem meme ...

Following on from the poems I posted, my friend Giz e-mailed me this :-

Haiku: Looking Out of the Back Bedroom Window Without My Glasses
(Wendy Cope)

What's that amazing
new lemon-yellow flower?
Oh yes, a football.

I easily identify with this, as walking around without my contact lenses in makes the world seem a real haze!

Peace

THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, HURRICANE KATRINA VERSION

From ginmar's journal (previously from twistedchick?), posted here in buzzflash ... a new version of the song.
I can't read it without getting moist eyes.

A new version was obviously called for; here it is.

Bearing on the City of New Orleans,
Katrina – massive Force Five hurricane -
The order comes to flee the helpless city,
Take the kids and run from the coming gale.
All along the northbound odyssey
The folk pull out and try to flee
Rollin' long past houses, farms and fields.
Leaving those that have no means,
Women, children, old black men,
In the graveyard of America's ideals.

CHORUS:
Good morning America where are you?
Don't you know, we're begging you to come?
We're the town they call the City of New Orleans,
There'll be thousands of us dead ere day is done.

The dead lie with the living in the Stadium.
And more arrive – ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the whole world crumblin' ‘neath the floor.
And the sons of Pullman porters,
Daughters of engineers,
Hide their fears ‘neath the mighty roof of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to a deafening beat
For the hurricane's horror's all they feel.

CHORUS

Nighttime in the City of New Orleans,
This is not the way things ought to be.
Help you say it should be here by morning,
But it's four days now. We're dying,
Can't you see?
And all the stricken people scream
– If only this could be a dream –
And the ruling class still ain't heard the news.
The Pres'dent sings his song again,
“You citizens, please stay calm.”
This town's got the disappearing gov'ment blues.

LAST CHORUS:

Good night America, where were you?
Don't you know, we all begged you to come?
We're the ghosts that haunt the City of New Orleans,
We were abandoned here. Our day is done.

  1. beer:
British real ale, well kept, and served slightly below room temperature ... yummy :) Even some of the continental ones are good. I have found a few good beers in the USA, but it is quite hard.
  2. computers:
I'm a geek, but don't have enough time to do all I want to do. I must have 6 or 7 computers either at my London flat or in storage (plus the one I'm typing on right now) and have set up home networks for a few people.
  3. dragons:
Roar energy :) I had a dream which included a dragon which was chasing me ... but I got away :)
  4. hhgttg:
Don't panic; keep your towel with you; the answer is 42, now what's the question?
  5. limericks:
    arrow by psheil (Peter Sheil)

King Harold went out to espy
How the enemy arrows would fly.
    "We've got nothing to fear,
They can't reach us back here."
And at that he got shot in the eye!

  6. meeting_people_with_whom_i_share_no_interests:
Strangers are friends you haven't met yet.
  7. palm pilot:
Let me make a note of that ... all my life is on my palm pilot and without it I'd be lost.
  8. punctuation:
Well, I do like to get it right. It's important that the aposrophe is used correctly ... I have read Eats, Shoots and Leaves and understand most of it!
  9. sky:
Sky pictures - see my web site - there is even one I got taken on the Earth Picture of the Day site.
  10. tom lehrer:
Some of the best political comment songs ever, with a dry sense of humour.
