I've arranged to rent a room from a guy here at work, so my days of luxury hotel living will soon be over. [*1] His bungalow is in a ... what ... hamlet maybe? ... small village maybe ... of Waterloo, about 7 miles northish from where I work. The only slight disadvantage is the "direct" road to get there. I went to have a look at the bungalow yesterday evening and I swear that at some points on the way the hedges at the edge of the road were rubbing against the car on both sides at the same time, and this is a two-way road that milk tankers go down to get to the farms! I'd just turned the first corner when I met a florist's van coming the other way. A couple of times I had to back up a bit to a place I could wedge my car into a gap in the hedge or a gateway so someone else could get past. I can see that it's not a route to drive if you're tired. I only managed about 15-20 mph down the road, with the occasional burst of "speed" on the one or two slightly straighter sections. Still it is very picturesque. I may walk along it a bit one day and take some pics so you can all see how narrow it is!
What else? Well I've got my company car back at long last. It had been away getting a dent fixed where a lady had skidded her car into it whilst I was stationary at some traffic lights. After the fun with the Fiat Stilo and the windscreen wipers that wouldn't turn off and then the Vauxhall Vectra with the indicators that indicated the other way if you tried to cancel them manually, it was good to get back into the Honda with the reassuring voice of the GPS guidance system telling me where to go. Mind you it did take me a couple of days to get used to the clutch bite point again - there were a few engine roars then lurch as I set off 'till my feet started working properly. My brain is still turning to soup when I try and find some of the controls 'cos each of the cars had them in different places. *grrrrr*
The other thing I've been doing is setting up a new community uk_livejournal. This is very similar to the livejournal_uk community but will have active moderation [*2} and only members can post. I've got the main parameters for the community set, but still need to agree the detailed posting rules - what can and cannot be there. I did a poll to see what people wanted but the results are a bit contradictory in places :) I'll be collating all the comments and doing another poll on the details sometime later this week.
Right, I better head "home" to the hotel. Catch you later.
*1: In case anyone doesn't get the sarcasm there, the Ibis hotel I stay at is 2 or 3 stars, basic but adequate. I'm paying my own expenses whilst I'm down in Cardiff at the moment but, strangely enough, can claim expenses when I'm staying at my flat and working in London. The rules for expenses are strange indeed!
*2: Well actually "active moderation" is maybe not quite the right term. I see it as allowing most people to post most of what they want most of the time but with some people who can sort out trolls and such like if they have to. Ideally we should never have to actually do anything, just look like we might be threatening if someone annoyed us :)
