Some random items of news from the BBC [Sep. 17th, 2003|02:10 pm]
Peter Sheil
Good luck to all my friends on the North American continent. I know the storm's been downgraded but it still sounds like a whole lot of "fun".
* US braced for Hurricane Isabel *
About 100,000 people are told to leave coastal areas and the Atlantic fleet takes as Hurricane Isabel approaches.

Even in Britain it seems that our war against terrorism has its detractors. I don't think we are heading quite as far as the USA are, but still losing some of our personal freedoms. It's a hard balance to get right and I don't envy any government trying to achieve that balance (let alone one just trying to gain as much power as possible).
* Terror laws are 'needless totalitarianism' *
Parts of planned new laws aimed at dealing with a large-scale terror attack smack of "needless totalitarianism", say the Tories.

Get those pieces of wet string thrown away - we're talking serious bandwidth requirements here. Mind you I'm only getting slow internet access for about 50% of the time right now and nothing at all for the rest, so personally I'd vote for reliability first ahead of speed.
* Net struggles with data overload *
Scientists are looking at ways of sending huge amounts of research data over a struggling internet.

Laurence J. Peter (1919 - 1988)

The louder he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)

He who will not reason is a bigot; he who cannot is a fool; and he who dares not is a slave.

Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable.

Hello [Sep. 17th, 2003|02:19 pm]

Yes, I am around :) just busy and "every minute counts" here right now. All a bit political about timekeeping and such - blah. Anyway I'm just finishing lunch so you get the two previous posts and this short chat.

I do try and read all my friend's journals but sometimes it isjust skimming, sorry :( just 'cos I don't comment doesn't mean I'm not reading and I may well think up some suitable responses later and surprise some of you :)

Peace

...and another thing ... [Sep. 17th, 2003|02:34 pm]

Just updated runningdiary.

For those that don't know I run ... not very fast admittedly ... but I have so far done two marathons in times around 6.5 hours. This year I'm running in the New York marathon in October [and it's September already] and just to warm up I'm running the New Forest half marathon on Sunday 21st September. Feel free to come along and cheer the runners. I'll be finishing around 2hr 30 minutes if all goes OK (or maybe earlier? dreams :) )

Anyway, you can pop over to the other journal and marvel at my lack of training - each training run gets entered so all those blank days are bad. I guess the Morris dancing does help my legs a bit - certainly the dancing seems easier after the running but maybe I'm just imagining it.

Peace
peter
