A man decides to join the circus. He shows up to demonstrate his skills to the impresario.
"I have the most unusual act," he announces. "I'm sure it will amaze you."
He proceeds to climb a tall tower, and jumps off. He flaps his arms wildly, and finally his fall slows. He soars forward, then swoops upward, turns and swoops back again. Finally he stops in mid air and gently lowers himself to the ground.
The impresario stares blankly at him for a long time. Finally he says, "Is that all you've got? Bird imitations?"
Yesterday evening I managed to get some code working - I've been trying to get this to work for almost a week and the feeling of achievement is so good!
For those interested in the technicalities it was getting what should have been an identity column in a table to actually work that way in a system we are writing. I had to write an insert trigger in the database [easy] and then get the code to execute the correct SQL to call the trigger without putting a null value in the key field. The code is in GuptaSQL and we have an existing system we are updating which creates all the SQL for each table INSERT/UPDATE/SELECT/DELETE automatically depending upon the setting of various undocumented flags.
Having cracked my technical problem I am now drowning in a sea of paper-work before the "Review and Approval" process. Talk about making mountains out of mole hills - that's paper mountains out of a mole hill of a new window in the application.
Still - just one more day then it's packing and flying over to the US for a week and a half ... yipeee. I surely need the break at the moment.
I'll probably be on-line intermitently over the next two weeks, I am moving around seeing two different friends so I may suffer a little jet lag at times. Please excuse any laxness in my responses, and any lowering of my grammatical and spelling standards as I am infected by contact with the great hordes of American speakers. :) [I love you realy :))) ]
