wouldnt it be great to turn on the news or read nothing but 'good news' for a switch?

Well I'm sure that there are actually "good" news stories but unless there is very little other news they just get buried by the "important" stuff.

Definitions of "good" and "important" are subject to change depending on your political view-point and the latest weather reports.
