Chatty Post [Jul. 4th, 2004|04:46 pm]
Peter Sheil
It seems like a while since I did one of these so I'll sit down and type for a bit :)

Firstly happy Independence Day to all my North American readers ... although I guess you'll all be out enjoying yourselves not stuck indoors on your computers.

The trip home on Friday evening was interesting for two reasons. Firstly I saw two rainbows whilst slipping through the scattered showers and setting sun. One in particular was very bright; felt like I could reach out and touch it if only I could get a bit closer. Rainbows always give me a mental lift; the colours springing out of the rain seem magic, some external power giving me a sign that life is good :) Yes, I know it's defraction of the sunlight in the rain drops, but just because there is a rational scientific explanation doesn't mean that it isn't magic as well.

The second thing was thah I didn't have a KFC when I stopped at the services! I only didn't 'cos the queue there was longer than I was prepared to wait for - I went downstairs to the shop and bought one of the most unpleasant tasting sandwiches I've had the misfortune to eat for a long time. [I have a gut feeling that I should add some punctuation to that last sentence to remove the ambiguity but either reading will give you an appropriate image, so I'll let it stay as-is.]

On Saturday I was cajoled into topiary - well OK actually "hacking a hedge with an electric trimmer" is a more accurate description. This went far better than I expected, although I did have to persuade my sister that we couldn't cut it back as far as she wanted or it wouldn't be green at all, just brown stumps. I had just about finished when I managed to cut through the cable causing a small spark or two and a bang! I've managed to repair it, cutting out the damaged section of cable and reattaching the shorter cable to the internal fixings in the trimmer. The only minor problem was when the things inside it sprang apart as I undid it - I can't find any extra bits laying around here and it did work when I eventually managed to get the bits to fit back together again so that must be allright :)

Not done that much today (Sunday) apart from a mad panic search for details about fridge-freezers. My Mum's one had stopped working, well the freezer bit of it had, and my sister was trying to get comparative price / performance details of different models. It ended up being a bit frustrating as the models the shop had and the models quoted on the Which? site weren't on the manufacturers' sites *grrrr* Still I think she's got a good one by a process slightly better than hit or miss.

I probably ought to head off to Cardiff soon, got to finish packing and other odds and ends, washing up, put the rubbish out, switch off everything etc etc *sigh* Oh and I haven't even talked about my Big Thought™. It seems a shame to cram it in as a quick aside so I'll save it for later in the week when I'm not so rushed.

Have a good week, take care, Peace
peter

The Which? organisation [consumerprotection / product testing not a pagan group :) ] recommended 5 fridge-freezers in their test of 23 models. The prices of these 5 ranged from GBP720 down to GBP 439.

Notes:
1. Fridge-freezers are one appliance usually with two doors with freezer and fridge sections.
2. Fridges are generally a lot smaller over here than the corresponding US model would be. You can get the bigger ones but you'll have less choice and it will be more expensive.

Does that help?

OK, sorry, but a lot of Americans don't realise that.

How could I possibly guess that you were intelligent? ;)
